Best fabrics for a kimono tunic
Choose a light to medium-weight woven fabric with soft drape, so the sleeves fall nicely instead of sticking out.
- Viscose / rayon – fluid, breathable and perfect for prints
- Linen blends – cool and relaxed for summer
- Muslin and double gauze – soft, crinkly and very comfortable
- Cotton voile – airy and light for hot weather
Avoid stiff fabrics such as heavy denim or canvas, and stretch knits (this pattern is drafted for woven fabric).
Pattern pieces and supplies
- 1. Front – cut 1 on the fold
- 2. Back – cut 1 on the fold
- 3. Neck binding – a bias strip 3.5 cm wide × (neckline length + 3 cm); about 3.5 × 50 cm (1⅜ × 19⅝ in) for size 40
- Matching all-purpose thread and a universal or microtex needle size 70/10–80/12
Sewing steps
- Cut the front and back on the fold.
- Place them right sides together and stitch the shoulder and upper-sleeve seams with a 1 cm (3/8 in) seam.
- Stitch the side and underarm seam in one pass. Clip into the underarm curve so it lies flat.
- Cut the neck binding on the 45° bias, join it into a loop, stitch it to the neckline, then turn it to the inside and topstitch.
- Hem the sleeve openings with a 1 + 1 cm double fold.
- Hem the bottom with a 1 + 1 cm (or 2 cm) double fold.
- Press. For extra ease of movement you can leave small slits at the side seams.

How to print and assemble the PDF
- Open the pattern PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader and print at 100% / Actual size on A4 or US Letter paper. Do not choose “fit to page”.
- Measure the 5 × 5 cm test square on the info page. If it is off, check your printer scaling before printing the rest.
- The pattern prints on 20 pages including the cover and info page. Trim the right and bottom margin of each tile, match the letters and numbers (A1, A2…) and the ⊕ corner targets, and tape the pages together.
- Trace your size using the size line key – each size has its own color and dash style. The 1 cm (3/8 in) seam allowance is already included.
Tips for a professional finish
- Pre-wash viscose and cotton before cutting – they can shrink 3–5%. See the Fabric Care Guide.
- Stay-stitch the neckline right after cutting so it does not stretch.
- Lengthen the pattern by 10–20 cm (4–8 in) at the hem to make a tunic dress.
- Use French seams on sheer fabrics such as voile for a clean inside.
