Best fabrics for a kimono tunic

Choose a light to medium-weight woven fabric with soft drape, so the sleeves fall nicely instead of sticking out.

Avoid stiff fabrics such as heavy denim or canvas, and stretch knits (this pattern is drafted for woven fabric).

Pattern pieces and supplies

  • 1. Front – cut 1 on the fold
  • 2. Back – cut 1 on the fold
  • 3. Neck binding – a bias strip 3.5 cm wide × (neckline length + 3 cm); about 3.5 × 50 cm (1⅜ × 19⅝ in) for size 40
  • Matching all-purpose thread and a universal or microtex needle size 70/10–80/12

Sewing steps

  1. Cut the front and back on the fold.
  2. Place them right sides together and stitch the shoulder and upper-sleeve seams with a 1 cm (3/8 in) seam.
  3. Stitch the side and underarm seam in one pass. Clip into the underarm curve so it lies flat.
  4. Cut the neck binding on the 45° bias, join it into a loop, stitch it to the neckline, then turn it to the inside and topstitch.
  5. Hem the sleeve openings with a 1 + 1 cm double fold.
  6. Hem the bottom with a 1 + 1 cm (or 2 cm) double fold.
  7. Press. For extra ease of movement you can leave small slits at the side seams.

Need help with the bias binding? The Bias Tape Calculator tells you how much binding a piece of fabric will make.

How to print and assemble the PDF

  1. Open the pattern PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader and print at 100% / Actual size on A4 or US Letter paper. Do not choose “fit to page”.
  2. Measure the 5 × 5 cm test square on the info page. If it is off, check your printer scaling before printing the rest.
  3. The pattern prints on 20 pages including the cover and info page. Trim the right and bottom margin of each tile, match the letters and numbers (A1, A2…) and the ⊕ corner targets, and tape the pages together.
  4. Trace your size using the size line key – each size has its own color and dash style. The 1 cm (3/8 in) seam allowance is already included.

Tips for a professional finish

  • Pre-wash viscose and cotton before cutting – they can shrink 3–5%. See the Fabric Care Guide.
  • Stay-stitch the neckline right after cutting so it does not stretch.
  • Lengthen the pattern by 10–20 cm (4–8 in) at the hem to make a tunic dress.
  • Use French seams on sheer fabrics such as voile for a clean inside.
