Free Summer Loungewear Set Sewing Pattern: Top + Shorts (PDF)

Sew your own matching set with this free loungewear sewing pattern: a relaxed drop-shoulder top and comfy shorts with an elastic and drawstring waist and in-seam pockets. It works as summer pajamas, a lounge set for weekends at home or a coordinated outfit for the beach.

This is for the top and shorts together. One piece on its own needs about half.

Best fabrics for a lounge set

• Viscose / rayon – soft, cool and silky against the skin
• Double gauze muslin – the classic summer pajama fabric
• Linen blends – breathable and relaxed
• Cotton poplin – crisp prints, easy to sew

Pattern pieces and supplies

• 1. Top front – cut 1 on the fold
• 2. Top back – cut 1 on the fold
• 3. Shorts front – cut 2 (mirrored)
• 4. Shorts back – cut 2 (mirrored)
• 5. Pocket bag – cut 4
• Neck binding: bias strip 4 cm × (neckline + 3 cm), about 4 × 51 cm for size 40
• Elastic 2.5 cm (1 in) wide: your waist minus 3–5 cm
• Drawstring: a 120 × 4 cm strip folded and stitched, or ready-made cord
• The 4 cm shorts casing is included in the pattern

Sewing steps – top

1. Cut the front and back on the fold and join the shoulder and upper-sleeve seams.
2. Cut the neck binding on the bias, join it into a loop, stitch it to the neckline, turn it in and secure.
3. Stitch the side and underarm seams and clip the underarm corner.
4. Hem the sleeves and the bottom with a 1 + 1 cm double fold. Roll the sleeves up for a cuffed look if you like.

Sewing steps – shorts

1. Cut the fronts and backs (2 each, mirrored) and attach the pocket bags at the notches on the side edges.
2. Sew around the pocket bags and join front to back at the outer seam, leaving the pocket opening open.
3. Stitch the inner leg seams, turn one leg inside the other and sew the crotch seam in one pass.
4. Make two small buttonholes at center front for the drawstring, then fold down the top 4 cm and stitch the casing, leaving a gap of about 4 cm.
5. Thread the elastic and the drawstring through the casing and close the gap.
6. Hem the legs with a 1 + 1 cm double fold and press.

How to print and assemble the PDF

1. Open the pattern PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader and print at 100% / Actual size on A4 or US Letter paper. Do not choose “fit to page”.
2. Measure the 5 × 5 cm test square on the info page. If it is off, check your printer scaling before printing the rest.
3. The pattern prints on 37 pages including the cover and info page. Trim the right and bottom margin of each tile, match the letters and numbers (A1, A2…) and the ⊕ corner targets, and tape the pages together.
4. Trace your size using the size line key – each size has its own color and dash style. The 1 cm (3/8 in) seam allowance is already included.

How much fabric do I need for the set?

From 2.0 to 2.4 meters (about 2.2–2.6 yards) of 140 cm (55 in) wide fabric for the top and shorts together.

Can I make the shorts longer?

Yes. Lengthen the shorts at the hem line; add the extra length to your fabric amount.

Is seam allowance included?

Yes, 1 cm (3/8 in) seam allowance is included on every piece.
